Introduction
That’s great!
Because we think that IOTA is one of the most promising and fascinating technologies in the entire crypto space.
At the moment investors have three investment options. They can:
- Buy IOTA with Bitcoin
- Buy IOTA with Fiat money (USD, EUR, etc.)
- Trade IOTA CFDs
Each of these options has its advantages and disadvantages.
We’ll address the pros and cons NOW.

Where should I buy IOTA?
First of all, you should know what your investment goals are.
What do you want to achieve?
If you’re interested in getting more involved in the technology behind IOTA, setting up your own wallet and sending transactions through the Tangle, we recommend buying IOTA tokens on a crypto exchange.
To find out how this works in more detail, click here.
In the event cryptocurrency price fluctuations are a point of interest for you, there is a simpler alternative that eliminates the need to deal with wallet security measures.
Through a broker, you can buy and sell IOTA CFDs that you can use to speculate on price increases (longs) or price drops (shorts).
This is very similar to classic equities or forex trading. Investors who already have a degree of experience here will get to grips with IOTA investments pretty quickly.

Trading IOTA on a crypto exchange platform
Unfortunately, the majority of all Crypto exchanges remain unregulated.
This means that you should never leave your money on these exchanges for longer than necessary.
Make sure that you have set up and secured your IOTA Wallet properly before you buy your IOTA tokens.
Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found here: How to setup your IOTA wallet
For a long time, there were no Fiat on-ramps for IOTA, as the innovative Tangle technology is more difficult to implement than, for example, a simple ERC-20 token on the Ethereum Blockchain.
Fortunately, providers like Bitpanda have taken a step in the right direction and now also offer the option of buying IOTA with Euro or USD.
How to Buy IOTA with Euro / USD
BitPanda was founded half a decade ago in Austria and is one of the largest Fiat / Crypto providers in Europe.
Thanks to a partnership with Post AG, you can now buy vouchers for BitPanda & Bitcoin in post offices across Austria.
In addition to bank transfer and credit card, you can also deposit money via Skrill or Neteller.
As a starting point, you just need to create an account and verify it with your real data (unfortunately this step is necessary for a Euros/ USD deposit).
Bitpanda’s interface is very intuitive and easy to navigate.
The buying process is simple. At the very top click on the blue “Deposit” button, select “Fiat wallets” and deposit your desired amount.
After you’ve done this, select IOTA in the top bar for cryptocurrencies and you’ll get to the IOTA asset overview.
Click on the “Trade” button to get to the buying-menu.
Select the Fiat wallet in which you have just deposited money and select the amount of IOTA you want to buy.
Confirm the process by clicking “Buy now”.
Don’t forget to withdraw your freshly purchased IOTA coins to a new address in your private wallet.
How to Buy IOTA with Bitcoin
To purchase IOTA with Bitcoin we recommend the Binance exchange platform.
Binance is considered the largest crypto currency exchange since 2018 in terms of trading volume and number of active users.
In addition to the IOTA / BTC trading pair, they also offer the exchange with Ethereum or Tether USD.
After successfully logging in, you’ll be redirected to the trading interface.
Deposit your bitcoins as usual via your user account. With this credit, you can then go ahead and buy IOTA.
Select “IOTA / BTC” in the list on the top right of the page.
You can choose between different order types. We recommend using the default limit buy order as it offers the lowest fees.
If you still want to buy IOTA at the market price, you can place a “Market Order”.
After you have bought your IOTA coins, go back to your user panel, click on “Withdrawal” and send those tokens to a fresh address in your private IOTA wallet.
How to Buy IOTA with PayPal
PayPal is one of the world’s most popular payment methods.
Unfortunately, buying cryptocurrencies with PayPal is still relatively difficult.
Bitcoins can be bought directly with PayPal, but these trades are often associated with eye-watering fees of more than 10%.
An alternative is the popular eToro platform.
Here you can deposit money with PayPal, and buy IOTA and other cryptocurrencies on the platform as well.
Unfortunately, eToro’s pay-out options are still limited. You need to reach a certain trading status before you can pay coins to anything other than the eToro wallet.
Nevertheless, we believe that eToro is the best option for investors who only really have PayPal as a deposit method because it is one of the few trading platforms that is fully regulated (UK – FCA 7973792, EU – CySEC 109/10).
It offers deposit protection in the event that investor funds are lost.
Step 1: Sign up
Create an account on eToro and verify your data.
After signing up and verifying your data, you will be directed to the trading interface.
Step 2: Deposit via PayPal
In the left sidebar, click on “Trade markets” and you’ll be able to filter for “Crypto”.
There, you’ll also find the deposit button.
Click on it, select “PayPal” from the dropdown list and enter your desired deposit amount.
Step 3: Buy IOTA!
After depositing your desired amount, navigate back to the trading interface and select IOTA.
In the new window you’ll find information about IOTA, a news feed and the chart interface.
Right next to the IOTA Chart you’ll also see the “Trade” Button.
Click on that button and enter the amount of IOTA you want to buy.
Note that on eToro you can trade with leverage.
This means that you can trade with more money than you have deposited.
For example:
You deposit $1000 on eToro and choose a 2:1 leverage. That means you can buy IOTA worth $2000.
This of course increases the risk and your position can be liquidated if the IOTA price falls below a certain value.
We strongly advise against using leverage for the highly volatile cryptocurrency asset class.
Finally, click on “Open Trade” to confirm your order.
How to Trade IOTA CFDs
If trading IOTA as an asset is your priority, then IOTA CFDs are the right instrument for you.
CFDs offer traders multiple advantages to buy & sell IOTA coins. These include:
- Trading with leverage
- No fees on opening / closing orders
- Higher security
- A variety of deposit / withdrawal options
One of the largest online brokers offering trading with IOTA CFDs is Plus500.
Plus500 is regulated under the UK Financial Services Authority (FCA 509909) as well as across Europe under CySEC (250/14).
Trading with leverage is supported for cryptos up to 2:1 and in addition to bank transfer and credit card, you can also deposit via PayPal.
Step 1: Create an account
As a first step, sign up to Plus500.
You’ll be asked if you want to open a ‘Real Money’ or ‘Demo’ account.
A demo account is an excellent way to start trading financial derivatives.
However, if you’d like to trade real IOTA CFDs, choose the Real Money account.
Cryptocurrencies are a highly volatile asset class. 77 % of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. There is a high risk of losing money, so you should never invest more than you can afford to lose.
As part of the registration process, you’ll have to confirm your data.
You can do this directly via Live Chat. Usually, the verification process takes a matter of minutes.
Step 2: Deposit fiat money
The next step is to deposit Fiat money (USD, EUR, GBP, etc.) on Plus500.
Various options are available.
Whilst bank transfers can take a few days, deposits by credit card or PayPal will be credited within minutes.
Enter your desired amount and you’re good to go!
Step 3: Trade IOTA CFDs
Now that you’ve deposited money, you can start trading.
In the left bar, navigate to “Trade” and filter the list for cryptocurrencies.
There you can click on the Buy button (4.) and sell or buy IOTA assets.
Please note that the number of IOTAs is counted in MIOTA (Mega IOTA).
E.g., 2,000 contracts equate to 2,000 MIOTAs, or 2 GIOTAs, or 2,000,000,000 IOTAs (the smallest currency unit).
Once you’ve closed your trade, your balance will be updated accordingly.
